Plum Orchard is one of the mansions located on Cumberland Island.  Histories of the mansion are linked below.  This is a photographic tour of the outside of the house as well as an excursion north of the mansion.

The Park Service is in the process of renovating the mansion, so tours through it are not currently available.

Front view of the mansion with one of the massive live oak trees to the left. Another view of the front of the mansion looking through the large live oak tree. The back of the mansion where no work has been done yet.  This is roughly behind the main entrance way.

One of the cornices supporting the cover for the doorway.  Just some architectural detail. Additional architectural details. Please note that this is about a 1" X 4" plate of probably cast iron anchored to the house by 1" bolts.  And this is to hold the drain pipe to the house!!!! Additional detail in the eves of the house.  Remember, this is at the back of the house!! Note the drain pipe and anchor as well as the dental molding under the eves.

At each end of the mansion are porches.  On each porch is a swing.  Now this is a SWING.  Notice the chains holding the swing aloft.  These chains would sag most porches by themselves. A view of the marsh from the Plum Orchard property. The waterfront at Plum Orchard.  Notice the oyster shells and colonies.

Along Brick River (where Plum Orchard is located) you can see how the trees have adapted to the tides and water flow as their roots spread out and then down to hold them aloft. The beach I have pulled onto is actually oyster shells.  There must have been millions of them there!!! At the very northern end of Cumberland Island is this lighthouse.  The sandbar extends a considerable way from the tip of the island into the Atlantic Ocean.  This was shot from the Atlantic side.
