When I first visited Weverton, it was difficult to find because the vegetation was still thick.  However, my last trip (December 30th) was quite different; you could see the massive Headgates from Highway 340 -- if you knew where to look.

With vegetation out of the way, the outlines of Caspar Wever's dream shows more clearly.  I was struck by the audacity of his vision and the work that he actually did accomplish.  So, I will let some photographs of his work speak for themselves.

The path I followed led me to the foundations of the stone cutting mill. Moving toward the Headgates, and looking back to the Potomac River through the mill foundation.
From the top of the mill foundation you can see the three openings of the Headgates and get a feel for how massive they are. One of the Headgates looking toward the Potomac River.  Notice the indentation for water control gates.
After leaving the industrial site, I walked downstream on the Canal Towpath for awhile and found the ruins of the hotel (?) that had been built at Weverton.  This is looking across the canal to the ruins.  The CSX railroad is in the background and in the far background is Highway 340. A closer view of the ruins.
