Seneca Stone Cutting Mill

“This branch left the B&O mainline at Weverton, MD, between Brunswick, MD and Harpers Ferry WV. …The branch was initially constructed some time in the late 1800's, and ran north to Hagerstown. “ From “Abandoned Railroads of the U.S.”, Maryland section

This branch went off the main line at the East end of Keep Tryst Road where the road joins 340 Eastbound.  The Appalachian Trail parallels the spur from Keep Tryst Road under current 340; just north of ducking under 340, the Trail and the spur part company with the spur keeping to the water level and the Trail going up to its highest point in Maryland, Weverton Heights.

These photos are of the branch line where it crosses Israel Creek.  The huge supports are for Highway 340.  The photo on the left was taken from the Appalachian Trail which also runs under the highway.  The photo on the right was taken from the bank of the Creek.

I actually stumbled across this branch line by accident. I had traveled over 340 many times heading to Harpers Ferry and beyond to shoot photos along the C&O Canal.  Finally, I decided to stop and explore the meaning behind the sign on the highway "Appalachian Trail"  That led me to an excursion on the Trail which led me to this branch line.
