[From a talk by Sam Lindsey, Jr. to the Daughters of American Revolution, January 16, 1990.]

"John (John Lindsey) went to Enterprise (MS) for a political picnic and met Carrie Winn.  She was a 15 year old girl and he was 11 years older, so he had to wait until she was of age before her parents would let them marry.

"There was only one train going North from Enterprise to Meridian each day, and it left at 8 AM.  They had their wedding at 7 AM so they could go to Meridian on their honeymoon.

"After marriage, they moved to Claiborne, in Jasper County, Mississippi just west of Heidelberg.

"The land they owned was where oil was first discovered in this area.  No, the minerals went with the land when it was sold.  John did not like farming so he moved to Sandersville where he engaged in logging.

"Their home on 5th Avenue (Laurel, MS) was constructed of poured concrete with walls 12 inches thick using railroad iron as reinforcing steel. Built in 1909, it was as near storm and fire-proof as was possible.  Carrie was afraid of bad weather and fire.

"He also had an elevator installed for her, the first in Laurel.  By the way, the house had 3 bathrooms.

"All her married life, she did not call her husband John, but always called him "Mr. Lindsey."
