On a trip down to St. Marys, Georgia, my wife and I discovered this little railroad. The mainstay of the railroad was the paper mill in the town. About a year ago, the mill closed and the future of the little railroad was in very serious doubt.

However, it is being reborn as a tourist railroad known as Historical St. Marys Railway.

[Update -- The tourist railroad did not materialize. The railroad was sold along with the Paper Mill to some investors who are going to tear down the mill and construct residential and commercial dwellings. The future of the railroad is uncertain at this time (Fall 2005).]

I had the pleasure of having a very spontaneous meeting with Herbert D. (Herb) Crabtree, Assistant General Manager for St. Marys RR. He has been with the railroad for over 20 years. He was excited. The RR had just purchased one of the oldest F3 diesel engines in existence, and they were putting the paint on it to get it ready to run. It will be the motive power for their dinner train.

Incidentally, the City of St. Marys is the location of the HGTV Dream House.
