One of the challenges for people whose small towns are changing is what do you do with large, un-occupied buildings downtown?

Some people in Brunswick, Maryland have this problem and a possible solution.  A church, that had been built about 100 years ago, was vacant.  So, they decided to redo the church into "The Beans in the Belfry".  While they were some weeks away from opening when I was there this month, their progress and the potential is huge.  I think you can see from these photos that they are keeping the beauty.

You walk out of the sunlight into the darker interior and immediately, the stained glass windows cast colored light over the green plaster walls and the wooden floor. So, you climb the stairs to get an overview of the room.  Instead of poorly lit or boring lights, you find more colored light cascading down on you from all sides as you go up to the 2nd floor balcony. Arriving in the balcony, more stained glass.  This area is going to be a place to link to the Internet.

Now you get a better overview of the room.  Still, it is so wide that you can only look at parts at a time.  While almost hidden in the shadows, the ceiling looks like the old tin, but fresh; the new brass chandelier is decidedly different from most church illumination; and the front of the church is being transformed into a cappuccino/soft drink area.   Turning to leave the balcony, you cannot help but be struck by the play of light and shadow in the old building.

I think that a hearty "Good Luck" should go to these entrepreneurs!!
