About 1/2 mile upstream of Milepost 102, was this culvert with the tree roots. The Conococheague Creek viaduct from the Potomac River side. Note Cushwa Basin warehouse in the background.  This is now a National Park's Tourist Center. The Conococheague Creek viaduct from the Potomac River side.  Note the driftwood caught against the support.  Also note that the upstream side of the viaduct is completely missing.
This is an all-iron railroad lift bridge that was constructed to carry railroad cars over the canal an to the power plant (out of view on the right).  According to "The C&O Canal Companion", this bridge "may have been used once before the 1924 flood." Here is a photo of three bridges over the canal.  In the foreground is the Bollman Bridge which was built in 1879. The railroad lift bridge is in the middle. In the background is the U.S. Highway 11 bridge over the Potomac River. Lock 44, the lockhouse and R. Paul Smith Power Station
Row of older homes along H'way 11 in Williamsport. St. Augustine Catholic Church. Model railroad store sign and downtown Williamsport.

Riverview Cemetery or Battery Hill or Doubledays Hill according to who you talk to or what you read.  During the Civil War, Abner Doubleday (he of baseball fame) commanded Union troops on this hill overlooking the Potomac River and ford.
