Bachlott-Merron House

101 Wheeler Street

John R. Bachlott had this home built in 1911 at a cost of $4,500 after his marriage to Miss Signore Brandon, the previous year (SE Georgia Progress Edition, 1978 and Camden County Marriage Records.)

Mr. Bachlott died in 1934 and his widow remained in the house until her death in 1948 (Oak Grove Cemetery Records.)
Gilman Paper Compnay [sic] purchased the property to encourage a doctor to move to St. Marys. At that time medical servies [sic] were provided only by a semi-retired physician. Dr. G. W. Barker established his office downstairs and lived on .the upper floor.

When the building was no longer needed for this purpose, it was sold. Terrell Porter is the present owner, (personal knowledge, Eloise Bailey.)

“Georgian 6/4/1909” “All the framing has been delivered from the mill for Mr. Bachlott’s house on Osborne St. & … [unreadable] Moore, assisted by his brother Mr. T.W. Moore, Mr. Gus Schmidt, is pushing the building uninterruptedly. All the lumber has been carefully selected & the house will be built [unreadable] to insure strength & durability as well as [unreadable]. It will be one of the finest residences in Camden Co.”

[Editors Note: This is now restored and used as the Administrative Building for the National Park Service overseeing Cumberland Island.]
