S.L. Burns came over to Saint Marys from Ireland. Here, he met and married Susan Grovensteine. The smaller headstone marks the graves of 3 of their infant children. A brief family history written in stone. John Bessent Sr. served in the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War and lived to be 79 years old. Major Archibald Clark was the Collector of Customs for Saint Marys, and served Presidents Madison through Polk.
The "33 U.S.C.I." apparently stands for "United States Colored Civil War Soldiers".  There is a listing for the "33rd" in the Beaufort National Cemetery Grave Registration. There is no name on this marker, but the inscription says, "he organized the frist military company in Camden County GA 1860 for defense of the south". This beautiful memorial is in the same enclosure as the marked on the left.  It is dedicated to "Mary R. Bailey wife of Alonzo B. Dufour".  She died in 1857, before the war.
