Sam Lindsey Jr., 77, of Laurel, died Monday, November 18, 1996, at his residence.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Laurel, with burial in Lake Park Cemetery in Laurel.  Dr. Randall Turner will officiate.

Mr. Lindsey was born in Laurel, the son of a Pioneer family.  He lived in Laurel all his life and graduated from Columbia Military Academy in 1939.  He furthered his education at Mississippi State University, married the former Helen Harrison of Fulton, and shortly after was called into military service.  He served until 1946 in the Pacific Theatre of Operation, in the jungles of New Guinea.

Upon his return to civilian life, he formed and managed the Pest Control Company until his retirement in 1990.  He served as President of the Mississippi Pest Control Association and also Director of the National Pest Control Association.

Scouting was his love, and being a Scoutmaster for many years he had held numerous positions in the scouting program.  In 1966, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in scouting.

An active member of the First Baptist Church of Laurel, he also served in many positions.  Currently, he was serving as Chairman of the Worship Committee of the Deacons.

He was an active Kiwanian.  He had held many positions in the local club, including President, and the Lt. Governor of a Division of Kiwanis International.  He was recently awarded the Tablet of Honor for Kiwanis International.

At age 70, Sam retired from his business but stayed involved as a train enthusiast (both regular and model trains).  He served as a Director of the National Railway Historical Society.  He recently participated in an Amtrak forum as an advocate for the preservation of the National Railway Passenger Service.  Most recently he served as President of the Laurel Depot Restoration Committee.

His other interests included carousels and theater pipe organs.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kelly Wynne Blackstock.
